North German 13th century, A 13th century North German aquamanile formed as a lion., Cast bronze with engraved, embossed and gilt decor. This fine aquamanile was formerly part of the collection of Bourgeois Frères in Cologne. It can be identified in a photograph in the catalogue accompanying the auction of this sale in 1904, and was dated to the 14th century by the catalogue editor Otto von Falke. The authenticity of this medieval work was confirmed via material analysis in 1998, although the lid in the lion’s head appears to have been replaced in the 19th century. In Falke’s seminal work on medieval vessels (Falke/Meyer 1935, op. cit.) he compares the piece to an aquamanile in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, describing both as “North German 13th century”. However, the whereabouts of this piece from the Bourgeois Frères collection was apparently unknown to him at the time of writing, and he confused the piece with a very similar vessel in the Historisches Museum in Lund (inv. no 20675) which had entered the museum from ecclesiastical ownership in 1919 and which Falke only knew from an illustration (in Rydbeck 1921 With minimal wear

Ostdeutsch circa 1380 & 1390, An East German carved limewood figure of the Virgin Enthroned, circa 1380/1390., Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened, deeply hollowed out and set with a horizontal peg. Original polychromy with gilding, silvering and embossed decor. A beautiful depiction of the Virgin seated on a moulded, cushioned throne designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. The separately worked figure of the Child which She would originally have held in Her lap has not survived. The Virgin wears a plain, girdled silver dress lined with red and a gold cloak lined with blue. The rich play of the cloak's drapery, accentuated by the exquisitely preserved original polychromy, largely defines the composition of the work. According the previous owner, the sculpture originates from St. Nikolai's Church in Elbing near Danzig. The child's forearm lost. With minimal wear

Northern France circa 1370 & 1380, A Northern French carved limestone figure of the Virgin and Child, circa 1370/1380., Carved in the round, the reverse only summarily carved and partially flattened. Very minor remains of former polychromy.. A particularly finely carved figure of the Virgin designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. The Madonna stands in contrapposto and leans back at the waist. She holds the Child in both hands to Her breast and looks down at Him tenderly. The sculpture is characterised by the detailed carving of the Virgin's hair and clothing. She wears a girdle book around Her belt and Her gown and cloak are draped to fall in a harmonious pattern of vertical folds to the ground or are held beneath Her arms forming cascades of sinuously curving seams at her sides. The front left corner of the plinth and fingers of the Child's left hand lost. With minimal wear throughout

Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, A white Carrara marble portrait bust of Albrecht Dürer., Carved in the round.. This idealised bust of Albrecht Dürer was made as part of a series of portraits of famous artists which Carrier-Belleuse carried out in various materials between 1860 and 1874. This portrait shows the legendary German artist not in the traditional, Christ-like manner but instead as an aged but vigorous character with the pathos of a true Renaissance man. Signed "A. CARRIER" to the reverse. In perfect condition. Mounted on a two-piece marble socle
