As published: “Bronze, cast, engraved, chased and with an old patina. A series of oval plaques with personifications of the four elements in landscapes, each shown with their corresponding attributes and inscribed "TERRA", "IGNIS", "AER" and "AQVA". Caspar Enderlein was among the most important makers of plaques of his time, and his compositions often followed designs by Fran?ois Briot. The present lot is the only known complete series of these works, and the only version known in bronze. Individual lead cast plaques from this series are kept in the Historisches Museum in Basel and in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. With minor wear. Each”
