Georg Rafael Donner, A wax relief of the Holy Family (after Raphael), Following his training under the sculptor Giovanni Giulani in Vienna, Georg Raphael Donner took a soujourn to Italy from 1706 to 1719, after which he was active in Vienna, Salzburg, and St. Petersburg. His works, carried out for the aristocracy and the church, led him to become one of the most important Baroque sculptors in Austria. This relief, signed "G. R. Donner" to the lower left, iterates Raphael's "Holy Family" (Paris, Louvre, inv. no. 604), painted in 1518 for Pope Leo X as a diplomatic gift for Francis I of France, which was housed in Versailles since 1695. This wax bozzetto is thought to have been carried out in preparation for a bronze relief which was never made, as otherwise the wax would have been lost during the casting process. An intact wax bozzetto of this size and quality rarely appears on the market. Minor cracks to the surface, some white residue. In a wooden frame
