About TING Yan-Yong

Ding Yanyong, also known as Ting Yin Yung, was a Chinese painter, seal carver and art educator. One of the first generation of Chinese artists to train in Western painting abroad, he is credited with helping introduce modernist European aesthetics to China, and later with turning back to the Chinese literati tradition in order to reconcile the two. Critics have called him the "Matisse of the East" and the "Modern Bada Shanren", after the two painters who most shaped his work. With fellow Guangdong artists Lin Fengmian and Guan Liang, he is sometimes grouped as one of the "Three Masters of Guangdong".
