  1. Westphalia circa 1480 & 1490, A Westphalian sandstone figure of Saint Elisabeth, circa 1480/90, Carved three-quarters in the round. The reverse flattened to the height of the shoulders and with a rectangular hollow, the veil only summarily rendered. Minimal remains of former polychromy. This fine quality work is probably carved from Baumberg sandstone and depicts a full-length figure of Saint Elisabeth standing on a facetted plinth, designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. She stands in a gently swaying pose with her right foot extended holding her attribute, a crown resting on a book, in her right hand, whilst another of her attributes, a beggar man, kneels at her feet and looks up. The composition and style of the work bring it into connection with a group of five sculptures from the Dominican Church in Osnabrück which formerly decorated the rood screen and have been located to a workshop in Münster active in the time around 1480 – 1490. We would like to thank Professor Hartmut Krohm in Berlin for bringing these similarities to our attention. The left hand of Elisabeth lacking. The right hands of Elisabeth and the beggar broken.
